GPS Tracking: the New Secret Service

Maybe you’re not the president, the governor, or an important member of a high-profile organization, but if you are living in today’s society and are out much at all, you should be alert for your personal safety. Perhaps you live alone, attend college in a city away from home, enjoy taking long hikes alone, and take “just for fun” explorations drives, or like to go jogging at night on the streets. Perhaps you are responsible for young children or an elderly relative. If you enjoy your “alone” time but want to stay safe, perhaps you should consider an investment in your personal safety. Maybe you are a caregiver for children or an elderly loved one and want to give them some freedom without compromising their personal safety. If any of these scenarios fits your situation, then consider making an investment in a GPS tracking system.

A GPS tracking device can help you stay safe wherever you are or can enable you to monitor the location of your loved ones. The GPS system is a series of approximately 24 satellites that orbit in outer space. These satellites work together (usually in groups of threes, sometimes groups of two) to determine the latitude and longitude of the individual on earth who is wearing the receiver. There are two types of systems—an active system that gives minute-by-minute updates to the internet or mobile device, or a passive system that creates a log of where you have been. An active system would be ideal for anyone desiring to keep tabs on the whereabouts of children or the elderly.

If you read the news at all, you have no doubt heard horror stories about girls going missing while out on a jog, only to be found after it’s too late. One fairly recent example was the breaking news story of Jaycee Dugard, who was held in captivity for over 18 years. GPS tracking devices can help keep you safe (or help law enforcement to find you before it is too late). They can also help you insure the safety of children that you may be responsible for, or elderly relatives for whom you are the primary caregiver. According to the FBI’s National Crime Information Center, 85% of 876,213 missing persons were under 18 years of age and 152,265 of them were considered to be involuntary or dangerous.

Elderly loved ones with Alzheimer’s can be at risk for wandering away and becoming lost or injured. Statistics show that three out of five individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease will wander. These patients can quickly become disoriented, traumatized, injured, and can even die from exposure. If personal safety for yourself or your loved ones is a priority for you, then an investment in a GPS tracking device would be a small price to pay for the benefits that it provides.
