Not-So Joyful Ride for Thief via GPS Tracking

Once again, GPS tracking devices prove to be a valuable investment for fleet tracking for any company that uses vehicles of any kind. The Houston Business Journal reported on the recent theft and recovery of a vehicle—and the recovery was due to the fact that company owners had made the decision to install the Informer GPS system in their vehicles.

The thief of the truck owned by a local business in Katy, Texas had no idea that the vehicle (worth around $20,000) was equipped with the GPS device. Employees were able to download the location information, catch up with the criminal, and keep him there until the police arrived.

GPS tracking devices are an important way to protect company vehicles, as Airtronics of Katy, TX discovered. There are many similar stories that occur in the news each day. With the rise of GPS technology, companies are able to secure their assets like never before. In fact, GPS tracking is so efficient that many insurance companies offer discounts to vehicles equipped with GPS tracking as an anti-theft device.

GPS is a good investment not only because it can protect your vehicle, but it can also protect the valuable equipment or shipment contained in the vehicle. Technology has so advanced that very small GPS devices can be inserted with the product and is rarely noticed.

Some types of tracking devices can even be designed to resemble the product. How can these devices be so accurate in pinpointing location? The basic idea behind GPS tracking technology consists of a series of satellites, approximately 24, that work together in groups of two or three (usually three) to determine the latitude and longitude of the vehicle (individual, or product) on earth wearing (or containing) the receiver.

The information can be retrieved from the internet via computer or mobile device. Many systems offer real-time tracking that downloads every 5 seconds, or even faster. GPS devices have powerful batteries that can last up to 90 days. The key in stolen vehicle recover is time—the faster you locate the car, the more likely you are to get it back in one piece.

Knowing exactly where the vehicle is located and is heading is vital to recovery—and since statistics show that a vehicle is stolen every 26.4 seconds, it is important to ensure company vehicles (and private vehicles) with a device that will put a stop to unwanted “joy rides.”
